    ITINERARY

The Historical City Walls and Gates of Iznik (Nicaea):
While the exact date of Iznik (Nicaea)'s city walls, which stand 10-13 meters high and have a total length of 4,970 meters, is unknown, they are generally documented as dating back to the Late Roman Period. In fact, Iznik (Nicaea)'s grid city plan is evidence that the city dates back to the Hellenistic Age, but the walls themselves do not date from that period. Unfortunately, due to earthquakes and wars, no traces from that period remain on the walls. The walls surrounding Iznik (Nicaea) are a significant structure dating from the Roman period and are largely well-preserved. The walls, which total approximately 5 kilometers in length, encircle the city through four main gates. Of the four main gates, the Lefke Gate (east) and the Istanbul Gate (north) are the two most important gates that have survived to this day. Both gates exhibit similar characteristics.

    • Istanbul Gate Click for the location. Number 1 on the map: It is the entrance gate to the city from the northwest. It is structurally well-preserved and stands out with its large arched entrances.
    • Lefke Gate: Click for the the location. Number 2 on the map: Located in the east, this gate is one of the most monumental gates of the city walls and is famous for its marble coverings.
    • Yenişehir Gate: Click for the the location. Number 3 on the map: It is located in the south and is a passage point extending towards the city center.
    • Lake Gate Click for the the location. Number 4 on the map: Located in the west, close to Lake Iznik, this gate provides access to the lake.

    The Green Mosque,
Iznik (Nicaea)'s tiled beauty, could be considered a symbol of Iznik (Nicaea). Commissioned by Çandarlı Halil Pasha, the Grand Vizier of Murat I, the mosque stands out for its marble mihrab, the first example of its kind in the Ottoman Empire, and most importantly, its minaret, adorned with turquoise, green, and purple tiles. In fact, this mosque was not a stand-alone mosque; it was a complex with a bathhouse and a madrasah. Unfortunately, the other structures within the complex have not survived. Damaged by the Greek occupation, the mosque was repaired in the early years of the Republic and later restored between 1956 and 1969. It was most recently restored again in 2015. Click for the location. It's number 5 on the map.

    Iznik Ancient Theatre
Located approximately 90 meters north of the walls of Iznik, this theater is one of the most important Roman-era ruins in the Marmara Region. It was built between 97 and 117 AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan by the provincial governor Plinius Secundus. The theater was built on a flat surface and has 19 galleries supporting the seating areas. Twelve of these galleries have barrel vaults, reaching a height of 6 meters. Blocks reinforced with rubble stone, lime, and sand were used in the interior. The theater is 84 meters wide east-west and 63 meters wide north-south. In the 8th century AD, as a precaution against Arab raids, the Byzantine Emperors Leo III and Constantine IV used the theater's stones in the construction of city walls. This structure serves as an open-air museum that functioned continuously from the Roman to the Ottoman period. Click for the location. It's number 6 on the map.

    Iznik (Nicaea) Hagia Sophia Mosque
Iznik (Nicaea) Hagia Sophia Mosque is the most famous structure in Iznik (Nicaea). Originally the church where the Seventh Christian Council convened in 787, Orhan Gazi converted it into a mosque after 1331 by converting the bell tower into a minaret. Suleiman the Magnificent then commissioned Mimar Sinan to add a mihrab and make changes to the side aisles. Used briefly as a museum, the mosque underwent restoration in 2007, a restoration deemed insufficient by the authorities, which sparked media attention. The mosque was finally reopened for worship as a mosque in 2011 after considerable debate. Click for the location. Number 7 on the map.

    Süleyman Pasha Madrasa
This is the Süleyman Pasha Madrasa, known as the first Ottoman madrasa. In fact, the first Ottoman madrasa, the Manastır Madrasa (1331), is the Iznik (Nicaea) Madrasa, but unfortunately, it has not survived to the present day. Its exact location is unknown. Built in 1332, the madrasah was commissioned by Prince Suleiman, Orhan Gazi's eldest son and known as the "Conqueror of Rumelia." It reflects the unique character of early Ottoman architecture. Currently, the madrasah has been transformed into a marketplace that also houses tile workshops. The doors of the old classrooms were made tiny, like those in hobbit villages, reportedly so that students could enter with their heads bowed. We definitely recommend a tea break here. Click for the location Number 8 on the map.

    Hacı Özbek Mosque
Built between 1333 and 1334, the Hacı Özbek Mosque is considered the first mosque of the Ottoman Empire. Because it is the oldest mosque with an inscription, that is, a written date of construction, the Hacı Özbek Mosque is the small, square-plan architecture of mixed stone and brick. Of course, the structure has been added to and rearranged many times. Click for the location . Number 9 on the map.

    The Iznik Nicea Obelisk
is also known as the Beştaş (Best Stone), is a 12-meter-high monument dating from the Roman period in Iznik (Nicaea), erected in the 1st century AD in honor of C. Cassius Philiscus. It is also known as the Beştaş because it is made of five marble stones, one on top of the other. It bears Greek inscriptions. The sixth stone at the top has not survived. It is thought to be a figure of some sort, such as the goddess of victory or an eagle. It is located in the olive groves within the borders of Elbeyli Village, 7 kilometers from the center of Iznik (Nicaea). It is easily accessible by bicycle. Click for the location. Number 10 on the map.

Basilica Under the Waters of Lake Iznik (Nicaea)
Discovered beneath the waters of Lake Iznik in 2014, the basilica provided concrete evidence for the legends of a sunken city beneath it. Encompassing an enclosed area of 600 square meters, the basilica is thought to be an Early Christian church with three naves and features Roman-era features. It is even known that Iznik is the only church recognized by all denominations in the Christian world. Some believe this could be the basilica beneath the water. Currently, excavations and research are ongoing, and its surroundings are surrounded by pontoons. Click for the location. Number 11 on the map.

    Iznik Museum:
Originally built in 1388 as an almshouse in honor of Nilüfer Hatun, mother of Sultan Murad I, the Nilüfer Hatun Almshouse has been used as the Iznik Museum since 1960. The museum displays finds unearthed from archaeological excavations in and around Iznik, while its garden displays sarcophagi, reliefs, amphorae, and tombstones from the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. Unfortunately, it has been closed for renovations since 2014, and neither the contents of the renovations nor the date it will reopen are known. We hope the museum will reopen to the public as soon as possible. Click for the location. Number 12 on the map.

    Iznik Aqueduct:
The natural spring water originating from a cave at the foothills of Elmalıdağ, just outside Iznik, was carried to the city via a canal and an aqueduct that has stood since the time of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The water, which reaches the fountain south of the Lefke Gate, is distributed to other fountains in the city via these aqueducts and finally flows into the lake. According to an anecdote about aqueducts, during a time when the walls of Iznik were thought to be unconquerable, enemy soldiers managed to infiltrate the city through this aqueduct. Click for the location. Number 13 on the map.

    Eşrefzade Mosque:
Eşrefoğlu Abdullah Rumi, a Meccan, was a member of Hacı Bayram Veli's lodge, first became his student, then his son-in-law, and finally established his own lodge in Iznik (Nicaea). The mosque was severely damaged by the Greek occupation, leaving only its minaret and wall ruins. Because its inscription is also buried among the ruins, its exact date of construction is unknown. However, it is believed to have been commissioned in 1518 by the daughter-in-law of Bayezid II. The mosque seen today, with the exception of its protected minaret, is a modernized version built in 1950 on the original. Click for the location. Number 14 on the map.

    The II Murat Hamam
The II Murat Hamam, also known as the Hacı Hamza Hamam, is one of the bathhouses that has recently been renovated and reopened. Dating back to the 15th century, the historic bathhouse is approximately 650 years old today. Open every day from 7:00 am to midnight, the bathhouse is open to women on Thursdays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. 650-Year-Old Turkish Bath. Click for the location. It's number 15 on the map.

    Sheikh Kutbeddin Mosque and Tomb:
This 13th-century Seljuk-era mosque and tomb is one of the oldest Islamic structures in Iznik. Sheikh Kutbeddin's tomb is a fine example of Seljuk architecture and is located adjacent to the mosque. Click for the location. It's number 15 on the map.
